WSP Council Reviews FY07 Achievements, Sets Targets for FY08

The Water and Sanitation Program (WSP) held its 8th Annual Council Meeting in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, on June 4 - 5, 2007. The main objective of the meeting was to: (a) review progress achieved in the implementation of the Fiscal Year 2007 Business Plan, (b) present highlights of the Fiscal Year 2008 Business Plan, (c) update the Council on the actions arising out of the 2006 Council meeting, and (d) seek the Council's guidance on WSP's strategic direction.

The two-day meeting held at the Amsterdam Water and Sanitation Utility (Waternet) was chaired by Jamal Saghir, Director of the World Bank's Energy, Transport and Water department. Participants included officials from 15 donor organizations, three non-donor members, and two observers.

We were very privileged to have His Royal Highness Prince Willem-Alexander, Prince of Orange and Chair of the United Nations Secretary-General's Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation (UNSGAB) at the meeting. His Royal Highness Prince Willem-Alexander spent almost 4 hours at the meeting in discussions with participants on areas of common interest and the ways in which WSP's business plan is supporting the objectives of the Hashimoto Action Plan and the International Year for Sanitation.

Over the two days, WSP presented: (a) storylines capturing the results achieved during Fiscal Year 2007 as well as updates from the four WSP regions, (b) highlights on activities planned for Fiscal Year 2008; (c) the financial situation, and (d) an outline of innovative measures currently being implemented to improve monitoring and evaluation as well as quality of the business plan.

Though not part of the formal Council meeting, WSP and the World Bank met with organizations in the water sector in the Netherlands to discuss activities in the sector and potential for collaboration.  Jamal Saghir (World Bank) and Ede Ijjasz (WSP) made presentations on The World Bank and Water Supply and Sanitation, and The Water and Sanitation Program: A Partnership for Development, respectively.  The presentations were followed by discussions with the participating organizations.

A detailed meeting agenda is given below along with links to the various presentations made at the meetings.
