WSP Collaborates with Ethiopia's Drive Toward 100% Sanitation Coverage

The partnership will help Ethiopia with its goal of 100% national sanitation coverage of all Ethiopian households by 2012, a target that goes beyond the Millennium Development Goal of halving the number of people without acces s to hygienic toilet facilities by 2015.

There is significant political will and resources allocated to tackle the challenge, and remarkable success stories are emerging. There are districts which have experienced high levels of latrine construction without substantial external assistance. Southern Regional State has managed to raise latrine coverage from 15 to over 85 percent in just 3 years (2002-2005) without substantial external finance.

In the Amhara region, sanitation coverage is now a performance indicator for elected local administrators who have dedicated themselves to achieve 100% sanitation coverage by 2007. WSP-Africa and HIP (funded by USAID) will co-operate on technical assistance and capacity-building for the Amhara Regional Health Bureau to scale up hygiene and sanitation improvements. The Regional Bureau will catalyze a systems approach which involves multisectoral stakeholders taking collaborative and sustainable action toward handwashing and sanitation improvement. Emerging good practice will be documented and shared with other parts of the country.
